The House Votes to Repeal Cadillac Tax by an Overwhelming Majority
This evening, the House of Representatives passed a bill (H.R. 748) which would repeal the Cadillac Tax – the excise tax on high cost health plans. The vote for the bill was 419 to 6. The repeal was not offset by any other tax increases.
The next step is for the Senate to consider the bill. Due to Senate procedural rules, it may be difficult to move a stand-alone tax bill like this one. However, there may be other opportunities this year to include provisions repealing the Cadillac Tax in other tax bills. The overwhelming bi-partisan support for repeal in the House may provide pressure on the Senate to act on the Cadillac Tax. ECFC will be flying in the Washington next week to met with legislatures and their staffs and repeal of the Cadillac Tax will be a major topic of discussion. We will keep the membership informed of any progress in the Senate on repealing the Cadillac Tax.
