OXFORD, Ohio —
Students on Miami University’s campus aren’t panicking, but are paying attention as officials said two students are being tested for the coronavirus.
Some students are wearing masks, while others are focusing on good hygiene.
“My friends, we’ve been talking about it, like, in our group message between me and … a couple of my friends,” 20-year-old student Jayden Crutchfield said.
Crutchfield, like others on Miami University’s campus, is talking about the coronavirus and how to avoid it.
“I just talked to my mom on the phone, actually. She was telling me to get some zinc and some, like, Vitamin C. So, make sure I have something, like, to take proper precautions and spray down, like, everything in my dorm room,” he said.
Officials with Miami University said two students who traveled to China recently are being tested for the coronavirus, though they said only one showed potential symptoms and the other is being tested as a precaution.
Some Miami University students who are from China are wearing masks and said they often do.
However, they also said the coronavirus makes wearing a mask even more important.
“I feel a little bit nervous and think … we need to protect ourselves,” student Jhanoi said.
Other students were also wearing masks on campus, but not all.
“Many Chinese students are very serious about it but American students … maybe they don’t know the seriousness in China,” Jhanoi said.
Student Kaylee Lacy said she’s focusing on washing her hands and taking every step to avoid getting sick while still going to class.
“It’s surreal. I mean, I haven’t ever dealt like that with anything in my life prior to this. So, it’s very surreal,” she said.
Officials said the two students being tested are not sick and do not need to be hospitalized, but are isolated.
They also said people are more likely to get the flu or a cold right now.
Still, if students want masks, several pharmacies in Oxford said they are out of stock at this time and are in the process of ordering more.
An employee at one pharmacy told us they ordered 50 masks and they were all sold within an hour-and-a-half.
